How do I reduce my electric bill? What do I do to reduce electric bill so I can start saving money instead of spending it? With the way the economy is today, it doesn't help that it seems like the electric company is constantly trying to rip us off. Here are a few tips to help you reduce electric bill.
1. The air conditioning and heater account for a good percentage of your electric bill. To reduce my electric bill, I turn my air conditioner up to about 76 to 78 in the summer time and turn the heater down to 68 degrees in the summer. So depending where you live and how hot or cold it is, you can save a lot by just keeping your air conditioner or heater at the right temperature.
2. Make sure you clean or change your filters for the air conditioner or heating unit on a monthly basis. Dirty filters can put a strain on the unit and increase your electric bill, if you make sure your filters are clean it can help you reduce electric bill.
3. If you keep your curtains, and shades closed during the summer, it will help keep the heat out. Open the curtains and shades to let the sunshine in during the colder months.
4. Keep your refrigerator shut as much as possible and make sure you clean the coils behind or underneath the refrigerator every 4 -6 months. Think about what you want before you open the refrigerator door so you don't keep the door open too long. Leaving the door open wastes extra energy. If you have kids who constantly go into the refrigerator try putting a lock on it.
5. Make sure your home is free from leaks. Make sure you get any leaky faucets or toilets fixed as soon as possible. Check your air conditioner or heating unit to make sure they don't have any leaks.
6. Switch to fluorescent lights that use one-third of the energy than incandescent lights. Using energy saving CFLs (Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs) instead of the conventional incandescent light bulbs can help reduce electric bill because they use about one-quarter less of electricity than incandescent light bulbs and they last longer.
7. Use the washer, dryer or dishwasher only when you have a full load. On the dishwasher try using the air dry feature. If you can, hang clothes out on the line instead of using the clothes dryer. Use the cold and warm settings on your clothes washer instead of hot.
8. Take shorter showers and make sure to turn off the water when you are brushing your teeth or shaving. This will not only save on water, but if your water bill is added onto your electric bill it will help reduce electric bill.
9. Make sure there are no cracks in your home where air or heat might escape. Weather-Strip Windows and Doors: Check windows and doors for air leaks. Air leaks can be sealed by caulking or weather-stripping.
10. Turn Off all Appliances Not in Use: Turn off all lights, computers, and electronics when they are not in use. Plug all your electronics such as computers, TVs, and DVDs into power strips. Using a power strip can reduce electricity used to power home appliances. Even when your appliances are turned off, energy is still being consumed from the outlet. To avoid extra energy costs, unplug the appliance or use a power strip. The power strip has an off button to cut all the power from the appliance.
As you can see, there are many ways to reduce electric bill.
